Back to School in the Triad: Tips, Events & Last-Minute Saves

Summer's basically over, y'all. If you blinked, you missed it — and now the carline is calling. Here's your one-stop guide to surviving the next few weeks: real tips, real events, and real last-minute moves for Triad families.

When are Triad kids actually going back?

Depends where you live:

  • Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools: first day is Monday, August 10 — yes, that's basically tomorrow.
  • Guilford County Schools (Greensboro, Summerfield, Oak Ridge, Colfax, Kernersville area): first day is Monday, August 24 — you've got a couple more weeks, but don't get comfortable.

Double check your specific district's calendar since some choice/magnet schools run different schedules.

Back to School Tips That Actually Help

1. Do a "trial run" morning. Before the real first day, run the whole routine once — alarm, breakfast, backpack, drive to school. You'll find the snags (missing shoe, forgotten lunchbox) while there's still time to fix them.

2. Label everything, then label it again. Water bottles, lunch boxes, jackets — anything that can walk off in a cafeteria will. A Sharpie and five minutes now saves you a trip to lost-and-found in October.

3. Reset the sleep schedule early. Start shifting bedtime earlier a few nights before school starts, not the night before. Nobody's first day goes well on four hours of sleep — kids or parents.

4. Set up one command center. A wall calendar, a clipboard, a shared phone calendar — whatever works. Between practices, pickups, and permission slips, you need one place everything lives.

5. Talk logistics with your kids, not just school. Who's picking up, what happens if plans change, what to do if they miss the bus. A two-minute conversation now avoids a panicked phone call later.

6. Learn the carline procedure before day one. Every school does this differently — car tags, specific entry points, one-way loops, staggered dismissal by grade. Check your school's website or PTA email now so you're not the one holding up the line (or in the wrong lane entirely) on morning one. Trust me, as someone who lives in carline twice a day, this one's non-negotiable.

7. Give yourself extra time in carline the first two weeks. Everyone's still figuring out the routine — new kindergarten parents, new procedures, new traffic patterns. Carline gets long and slow those first couple weeks before it settles into a rhythm. Leave earlier than you think you need to, especially for drop off.

Back to School Events Happening Around the Triad

Grab your kids and go — most of these are free.

  • Guilford County DSS Back-to-School Supply Giveaway & Resource Fair — Saturday, Aug. 8, 11 a.m.–2 p.m., DSS Greensboro office (1203 Maple St). Free school supplies while they last, plus face painting, games, and lunch. Rain date is Aug. 15.
  • Back to School Extravaganza — Saturday, Aug. 8, 1–5 p.m., Eastside Park in Asheboro. Free backpacks, supplies, inflatables, food trucks, and live music courtesy of local churches and organizations.
  • Guilford County Public Health immunization clinics — running through early August in Greensboro (1100 E. Wendover Ave.) and High Point (501 E. Green Dr.), Monday–Friday, by appointment. If your kiddo needs required shots before school starts, call 336-641-3245 — spots are filling fast.
  • Carolina Complete Health Back to School Bash — check their Community Connection Centers for dates; free backpacks and supplies for members, open resources for the community too.

Always double-check details before you go — these grassroots events shift dates and locations more than the big retail ones.

End-of-Summer, Last-Minute Triad To-Dos

Running out of August? Here's what to squeeze in before the bell rings:

  • One more pool day. You know the spots — get there before everyone else has the same idea over the last weekend.
  • Haircuts and dentist appointments now, not the week of. Everyone else is booking too — call today.
  • Stock the freezer. A few easy dinners on hand means the first chaotic week of practices and carline doesn't turn into fast food every night.
  • Check the supply list twice. Teachers update these right up until the first day — don't buy early and get stuck with the wrong folder color.
  • Walk the school if you're new to the area. If you've relocated to the Triad this year (trust me, I did the Florida-to-Triad move myself), a quick visit to campus before day one takes so much stress off that first morning.

However these next few weeks shake out, you've got this. And if house-hunting is somehow also on your plate this fall — because nothing says "busy season" like buying a home during back-to-school — you know where to find me.
